Samuel and Saint Philip

Description

Master Mateo and his workshop. Ca. 1200. Granite
The two images, from Master Mateo’s choir, which occupy the intermediate level in the first section on the right side of the façade of the Holy Door are those identified as Samuel the prophet and Philip the apostle.
The first accompanied Moses and Aaron on the north side of the façade of the choir, therefore playing a leading role in the ensemble in his capacity of prophet, priest, and last Judge of Israel. It was up to him to establish the monarchy and anoint its first kings, who appear on the other side of the façade.
Saint Philip was in the second section of the apostles, on the south side of the choir, next to Andrew, Bartholomew, and Thomas. He has a youthful face and turns his head in a readiness to dialogue with his partner. He holds a scroll with his right hand while hiding his left arm, crossed over his chest under his clothes.
