Horses of the Three Wise Men Entourage

Description

Master Mateo and his workshop. Ca. 1200. Granite with remains of polychromy

The entrance of the cathedral canons to the interior of the choir, which occupied the first sections of the central nave of the cathedral, was through the open door at its head. In order to get there, it was necessary to go through the façade of the choir first, which was presided by a tympanum with the Adoration of the Wise Men that has not been preserved. On one of its sides, there would probably be a relief with the Annunciation and, on the other side, this piece that was recovered in archaeological works carried out in 1978 at the top of the Obradoiro staircase.
The architectural element with the shape of a rectangular tower located on one side continues the sequence of the cresting of the choir outside walls, in which biblical figures and towers alternated. The heads of three horses related to the Three Wise Men entourage on the adjoining tympanum stand out.
